Latex care can be intimidating when you buy your first latex dress, bodysuit, or lingerie piece. Yet, keeping a latex garment in perfect condition is much easier than you might think. A few precautions, gentle washing after use, proper drying, and the right products are all you need to preserve its suppleness, colour, and shine for longer.
Latex is a spectacular material.
Smooth, like a second skin, and sometimes almost liquid when perfectly shiny, it instantly transforms any silhouette.
But unlike traditional fabric lingerie, natural latex requires some special care.
No washing machine.
No tumble dryer.
No oils.
No storage in direct sunlight.
And above all, no need to make it complicated.
At BRIGADE MONDAINE, we offer many latex creations, including those by ANOESES, with whom we partner in France. We regularly find that some customers still hesitate to buy latex for fear of its maintenance.
This fear is largely disproportionate.
Once you understand a few essential rules, caring for latex becomes a very simple routine.
Why does latex require special care?
Latex used to make clothing and lingerie has very different properties from conventional fabric.
It is extremely stretchy, fits the body with remarkable precision, and has a characteristic smooth surface that can go from a relatively matte appearance to a spectacular shine when treated with the right product.
But this material is also sensitive to certain external elements.
The main enemies of latex are:
- oils and body fats;
- excessive heat;
- UV rays and prolonged exposure to sunlight;
- certain metals, especially copper, brass and bronze;
- sharp or pointed objects;
- improper storage;
- prolonged contact between certain colours.
Knowing these few incompatibilities is already the main thing you need to know about caring for latex.
Should you wash a latex garment after every use?
Yes, it is preferable.
After being worn, latex has come into contact with sweat, skin oils, and possibly a dressing aid and a shine product.
It is therefore recommended to clean it after use rather than putting it away straight away.
This habit prevents residues from remaining on the material and helps keep the garment clean before its next use.
Washing is particularly important for pieces that cover a large part of the body, such as the ANOESES STELLA Latex Bodysuit, the ANOESES ENTROPY Latex Bodysuit, or latex dresses.

How do you properly wash a latex garment?
Good news: you don't need a complicated technique.
The principle is extremely simple.
- Fill a basin, a perfectly clean sink, or a container with lukewarm water.
- Add a small amount of cleaner specially designed for latex.
- Gently immerse the garment in the water.
- Move it gently to remove sweat, body oils and product residues.
- If an area needs more attention, simply use your fingertips.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Then let the garment drain and dry properly.
In the absence of a specific cleaner, some manufacturers occasionally allow the use of a small amount of mild, unscented soap. However, for the regular care of a valuable piece, we recommend a product specifically formulated for latex.
Can you wash latex in a machine?
No.
A latex garment must be washed by hand.
A machine causes rubbing, twisting and mechanical stress that are completely unnecessary for this material.
Latex doesn't need such an aggressive wash anyway.
A few minutes in lukewarm water with a suitable cleaner is usually enough.
Never put your latex in a tumble dryer either.

What water temperature should you use to wash latex?
Use lukewarm water.
You don't need to use hot water to properly clean a latex garment.
Excessive heat is precisely one of the things you want to avoid.
A gentle temperature allows you to clean the material without subjecting it to unnecessary heat stress.
Should you rub a stain on latex?
Avoid aggressive rubbing.
Do not use a hard brush or abrasive sponge.
If a small area needs special cleaning, work it gently with your fingers while the garment is immersed in soapy water.
The general rule is simple: latex likes gentleness.
How do you dry a latex garment after washing?
Once rinsed, let the garment drain naturally.
You can gently remove some drops with soft absorbent paper, without rubbing.
For pieces suitable for hanging, use a plastic hanger or a padded hanger that is wide enough.
Avoid metal hangers.
Drying should always take place:
- at room temperature;
- in a well-ventilated area;
- away from the sun;
- away from a radiator;
- away from a hairdryer or any other heat source.
Depending on the garment's construction, it may be useful to turn it inside out so that both sides dry perfectly.
Never put away a latex piece while it is still damp.

Why should latex be protected from the sun?
UV rays accelerate the ageing of latex and can cause its appearance and colour to deteriorate.
This obviously does not mean that a latex garment can never be worn outdoors.
You should simply avoid leaving it unnecessarily exposed to the sun for long periods, especially during drying or storage.
So after washing, forget about the balcony in direct sunlight.
Drying in the shade is preferable.
Why are oils dangerous for latex?
This is probably the most important rule to remember.
Oils and body fats can break down natural latex.
You should therefore avoid contact with:
- body oils;
- massage oils;
- baby oil;
- oil-based lubricants;
- greasy creams;
- certain oily cosmetics.
Before applying a product to a latex piece, always check that it is explicitly compatible with this material.
This precaution is particularly important when a latex garment is worn in an intimate context.

Be careful with body creams before putting on latex
The precaution regarding oils does not stop at lubricants.
A rich body cream, moisturising oil or certain cosmetic products can also leave a greasy film on the skin.
For a large latex piece worn directly on the body, the easiest thing to do is therefore to take a shower before getting dressed and avoid greasy body products just before putting on the garment.
This way, you start with clean skin and avoid unnecessarily transferring residues to the latex.
How do you put on a latex garment without damaging it?
It is often when getting dressed that new users make the easiest mistakes to avoid.
Latex is stretchy, but you should not pull it abruptly.
Avoid gripping a small area between your nails to try and pull the garment up.
Instead, use the surface of your fingers and hands to spread the tension over a wider area.
Long nails, rings, bracelets, watches and jewellery with sharp angles require special attention.
On a fitted bodysuit like the ANOESES Natural Latex ENTROPY Bodysuit, a latex-compatible dressing aid makes the process much easier.
Should you always use a product to put on latex?
Not necessarily.
A small piece like a thong, panties or certain bras can sometimes be put on without any special help.
However, for a bodysuit, stockings, leggings, long gloves or a very fitted piece, a dressing aid considerably simplifies the process.
The garment slides more easily over the skin, which also limits unnecessary pulling on the material.
This is particularly relevant for the ANOESES STELLA Latex Long Gloves, whose fitted shape naturally requires more care when putting them on.
Talc or dressing aid: which should you choose?
Both approaches exist.
Talc, in particular, helps prevent latex surfaces from sticking together and can make handling certain pieces easier.
Liquid products specially formulated for dressing allow the latex to slide much more easily over the skin.
For a large, very fitted piece, liquid dressing aid is generally particularly comfortable.
For storage, a very thin layer of talc remains a classic and effective solution to prevent the latex from sticking to itself.

Why isn't new latex always shiny?
This is an extremely common question.
We spontaneously associate latex with this spectacular, shiny, almost liquid surface seen in fashion photographs.
But natural latex does not necessarily achieve this mirror-like appearance on its own.
The spectacular shine seen in photoshoots is generally achieved with a suitable finishing product.
A garment may therefore seem more matte to you when it is clean and dry.
This is perfectly normal.
The shine product is the finishing step.
How do you make a latex garment shine?
Once the garment is clean and dry, use a shine product specially formulated for latex.
Apply a small amount and spread it gently over the surface.
It is generally not necessary to saturate the material with product.
A thin, even layer is enough to gradually bring out this deep shine characteristic of latex.
The result is particularly spectacular on black, deep red or semi-transparent pieces.
This can be seen, for example, on the ANOESES IMPULSE Black Latex Dress or the ENTROPY Semi-Transparent Smoky Latex Bodysuit.

Can you put too much shine product on latex?
Yes, and it is unnecessary.
An excessive amount does not necessarily mean more shine.
It may simply leave a lot of product on the surface and make handling less pleasant.
It is better to start with a small amount and add more if necessary.
This is one of the simplest rules of latex care: use the right product, but not in excess.
Be careful with metals: copper, brass and bronze
Certain metals can cause a reaction when they come into contact with latex and create particularly visible stains, especially on light colours or transparent latex.
The copper, brass and bronze in particular require special vigilance.
This obviously applies to jewellery, but also to certain metal accessories or objects handled just before touching the garment.
For light or semi-transparent latex, we recommend being particularly careful with piercings and jewellery containing copper.
A stain caused by a metal reaction can be extremely difficult, or even impossible, to remove.

What about the garment's zippers and metal elements?
The presence of metal elements built into the garment by the designer is obviously different from accidental contact with unsuitable metal.
Some garments deliberately combine latex with zips, buckles or other metal elements.
The ANOESES ENTROPY Bodysuit, for example, has a two-way zip fastening.
After washing, simply make sure to carefully dry the metal elements and the areas of latex around them.
Moisture must not be trapped during storage.
Can you store black latex and coloured latex together?
We advise against it.
Different colors of latex should ideally be stored separately.
This is particularly important for white, light, transparent, semi-transparent latex, or latex in certain bright colors.
Prolonged contact with darker latex can cause color transfer.
If you own several pieces, store them separately in their respective protective covers.
This precaution becomes particularly important as you begin to build a proper latex wardrobe.
How to properly store latex clothing?
A clean and perfectly dry garment should be stored:
- in a dark place;
- at a reasonable temperature;
- away from sunlight and UV rays;
- away from heat sources;
- separate from colors that may bleed;
- away from oils and greasy products;
- without prolonged contact with unsuitable metal.
You can lightly powder the latex to prevent surfaces from sticking together.
Depending on the garment, it can be carefully folded or hung on a suitable, non-metallic hanger.
For long-term hanging, choose a hanger wide enough not to create tension points or deform the shoulders.
Can you fold latex clothing?
Yes.
Latex can be carefully folded when it is perfectly clean and dry.
Simply avoid extremely tight folds or storing it under a pile of heavy clothing for very long periods.
A thin layer of talc helps prevent different surfaces from sticking together.
For a garment featuring multiple colors, also pay attention to how the different areas touch each other when storing it.
Why can latex look whitish after washing?
Don't worry.
Certain bright colors and semi-transparent latexes may temporarily show streaks or look whitish after washing.
This can be perfectly normal while drying.
The appearance changes once the garment is completely dry and its finish is restored with a suitable shine product.
So do not start vigorously rubbing the material thinking it is stained.
What should you do if latex starts sticking to itself?
This is precisely one of the functions of talc and specific care products.
Perfectly clean latex stored without protection can tend to adhere to itself.
Do not pull abruptly on two surfaces that are stuck together.
Separate them gradually and then use a suitable product or a small amount of talc before storing.
Prevention is much easier than having to separate a garment that has been stored for several months.
Be careful with nails, rings, and jewelry
Latex handles stretching very well when it is distributed evenly.
It handles tension extremely concentrated on a few millimeters much less well.
A nail pinching the material, a protruding ring, or a bracelet with an edge can create a weak point.
When putting on a dress, bodysuit, tights, or gloves, always use the pads of your fingers and your palm rather than your nails.
It is a simple gesture that very quickly becomes instinctive.
How to care for latex gloves?
Long gloves deserve special attention because they are narrow and each finger constitutes an independent area.
The STELLA ANOESES Long Gloves should be put on gradually, without pulling abruptly on the fingertips.
A small amount of latex-compatible dressing aid makes putting them on considerably easier.
After use, the inside must be washed and, above all, perfectly dried before storing.
Do not leave moisture trapped at the bottom of the fingers.
How to care for a latex dress or bodysuit?
Large pieces do not necessarily require more technique.
They simply require a little more space for washing and drying.
An ANOESES IMPULSE Dress, a STELLA Bodysuit, or an ENTROPY Bodysuit can be cleaned using the same principle: lukewarm water, suitable cleaner, gentle handling, rinsing, then complete drying.
For dressing, however, a specific product becomes particularly useful on very tight areas.
How to care for latex lingerie?
Small pieces are generally even easier to care for.
The ANOESES SAGA Latex Thong, the SAGA Latex Bra, or the SAGA Latex Garter Belt require less space and dry naturally faster than a dress or bodysuit.
The same rules still apply, however: wash after use, lukewarm water, compatible products, complete drying, and protected storage.
Can latex last a long time?
Yes.
A quality piece that is properly cared for can accompany its owner for a long time.
Its longevity obviously depends on the frequency of use, its thickness, its construction, and the way it is handled.
But much of the premature deterioration comes mainly from a few perfectly avoidable mistakes: storage in the sun, oil, heat, unsuitable metal, or overly rough handling.
This is why caring for latex is less a matter of work than a matter of good habits.

The BRIGADE MONDAINE latex care range
We have also developed our own BRIGADE MONDAINE range dedicated to latex care, available in our Private Boutique in Paris.
This range was designed around the different steps necessary for the use and preservation of a latex piece:
- cleaning the latex after use;
- dressing aid for fitted pieces;
- shine and finish of the latex;
- protection of the material during storage.
The goal is deliberately simple: to have a few clearly identified products and know exactly when to use them.
It is not necessary to assemble an arsenal of products to take care of your latex.
A consistent routine is enough.
The BRIGADE MONDAINE routine in 4 steps
If you have to remember only one thing from this guide, remember this routine:
- Put on: use a latex-compatible dressing aid when the piece is very fitted.
- Wear and shine: apply a small amount of suitable shine product to achieve the desired finish.
- Wash: after use, clean gently by hand in lukewarm water with a suitable cleaner.
- Dry and store: let dry completely away from the sun and heat, then protect the material before storing.
That's it.
Latex requires precaution.
It does not require an hour of care after each use.
The 10 mistakes to never make with latex clothing
- Putting it in the washing machine.
- Putting it in the dryer.
- Using oil or an oil-based lubricant.
- Letting it dry in direct sunlight.
- Placing it on a radiator.
- Pulling on it with your nails.
- Using an abrasive sponge or brush.
- Storing it while it is still damp.
- Storing light and dark colors together without protection.
- Leaving light latex in contact with copper, brass, or bronze.
By simply avoiding these mistakes, you have already eliminated most of the risks of premature deterioration.

Is latex ultimately difficult to care for?
No.
This is probably the most important point of this article.
Latex is a special material, but special does not mean complicated.
You simply do not treat it like cotton or polyester.
Once you know to avoid oil, heat, UV rays, certain metals, and rough handling, the rest becomes extremely natural.
You put it on with care.
You wash it gently.
You let it dry.
You protect it.
And when you want to restore that spectacular look unique to latex, you apply its shine product.
A few minutes of care thus allow you to enjoy a material that has virtually no visual equivalent for a long time.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about latex care
How to wash latex clothing?
Wash it by hand in lukewarm water with a small amount of cleaner specially designed for latex. Handle the material gently, rinse it, then let it dry completely in the open air.
Should latex be washed after each use?
Yes, it is recommended. Washing helps remove sweat, sebum, and product residues before storing.
Can latex be washed in a machine?
No. Latex must be washed by hand. The movements and mechanical stresses of a washing machine are not suitable for this material.
Can latex be put in the dryer?
No. Always let your latex dry naturally, at room temperature and away from the sun and heat sources.
How to make latex shine?
Use a shine product specially designed for latex. A small amount spread evenly over the surface will gradually achieve the characteristic shiny appearance of this material.
Why is my latex matte after washing?
This is normal. Clean and dry latex does not necessarily have the extremely shiny appearance seen in photographs. This finish is achieved using a suitable shine product.
Can oil be used on latex?
No. Oils and greasy substances can degrade natural latex. Avoid massage oils, body oils, baby oil, and oil-based lubricants in particular.
What lubricant should be used with latex clothing?
Use only a product whose compatibility with latex is clearly indicated. For dressing, choose a product specifically designed to make putting on latex clothing easier.
Can talc be used on latex?
Yes. A thin layer of talc can prevent latex surfaces from sticking together during storage and can also make handling certain pieces easier.
Why should copper be avoided with latex?
Copper and certain alloys such as brass and bronze can cause a reaction and leave brown stains, particularly visible on light or transparent latex.
Can black latex and light latex be stored together?
It is preferable to separate them. Prolonged contact between different colors can cause transfer, which is particularly problematic on light or transparent pieces.
How to store latex for several months?
The garment must be perfectly clean and dry. Store it in a dark, cool, and dry place, away from UV rays and heat. A light layer of talc helps prevent it from sticking to itself.
Can a latex garment be hung?
Yes, when its construction allows it, but use a plastic or padded hanger that is wide enough. Avoid metal hangers and hangers that are too thin, as they may create tension points.
How to avoid tearing latex when putting it on?
Avoid pinching and pulling the material with your nails. Use your fingers and palm to distribute the tension, remove jewelry that may snag the garment, and use a latex-compatible dressing aid for very tight pieces.
